Founded as the Chemical Rubber Company, CRC originally manufactured and distributed laboratory supplies for chemists. It first distributed its Handbook of chemistry and Physics free as a bonus incentive to customers who purchased a rubber apron, one of the company's signature items. In 1913, the first edition of the "Rubber Handbook" had 116 pages. The electron had been known for only 17 years and the Bohr theory if the hydrogen atom was still in press. Eighty-two editions later, the CRC Handbook
of Chemistry and Physics remains the definitive reference for chemist, physicists, and engineers throughout the world. Eighty-nine years later, CRC Press is a preeminent publisher in science, medicine, environmental science, forensic, engineering, business, technology, mathematics, and statistics.
Today, CRC Press provides academicians and researchers with immediate
access to information through a myriad of electronic products. With CD-ROM
versions of our most popular resources, users enjoy customized data and
convenient and extensive search capabilities. CRCnetBASE, our collection of online databases, provides a portal to an ever-growing supply of information. Every Month we add new sources to each "netBASE" to provide up-to-date, authoritative information. Following the success of ENGnetBASE, CHEMnetBASE, ATSDR Online, and recently released ENVIROnetBase, expect to see more excellent online collections including: FORENSICnetBASE, MATHnetBASE, and STATnetBASE.
In 1973, the Chemical Rubber Company sold their manufacturing division and related activities. Concentrating exclusively on publishing, the name was changed to CRC Press, Inc. In 1986, CRC Press was purchased by Times Mirror Company and subsequently expanded its prodict line to include a broad range of text/reference titles for scientific, medical, and technical professionals. Information Ventures LLC, in partnership with Warburg Pincus, purchased CRC
Press in January of 1997 and changed its name to CRC Press LLC. In August 1998, CRC Press became a publicly-held company under its current ownership of Information Holdings, Inc. and dropped the LLC from its name. IHI is a leading provider of information products and services to the scientific, technical, medical, intellectual property, and IT learning markets.
