The idea for the starting point for this book is to present a history of mathematics that is not divided up into different historical periods, nor into the different fields of mathematical knowledge : the different chapters deal with the birth and development of problems showing how this led to the creation and transformation of mathematical tools needed for their solution. The fifteen histories that compose this book are the stories of fifteen "great problems" in the history of mathematics, they set out to be an introduction to mathematics that is both cultural an historical. The histories contain historical material an referenced quotations that will allow the reader to learn in what way the problems were posed and solved at different periods of time. They also contain exercices to be solved according to ancient and modern methods : working through these will let the reader himself enter into an intellectual adventure.
